For Sandi

Let the light of late afternoon
shine through chinks in the barn, moving
up the bales as the sun moves down.

Let the cricket take up chafing
as a woman takes up her needles
and her yarn. Let evening come.

Let dew collect on the hoe abandoned
in long grass. Let the stars appear
and the moon disclose her silver horn.

Let the fox go back to its sandy den.
Let the wind die down. Let the shed
go black inside. Let evening come.

To the bottle in the ditch, to the scoop
in the oats, to air in the lung
let evening come.

Let it come, as it will, and don't
be afraid. God does not leave us
comfortless, so let evening come.

-- Jane Kenyon, "Let Evening Come"

Always. But that's a pretty expensive cuppa tea :-)

Next August my parents will have their 40th wedding anniversary and we're starting to toy with the idea of maybe MAYBE making the trip to Maine. Not sure if the girls will be old enough then to make the flight from A'dam to Boston. (And then to sit another 6 hours in the car before finally getting to Pake and Beppe's.) Not sure if I'm young enough to deal with the stress of flying with children :-)

But if we do come, then there will definitely be a swing through Michigan (maybe fly back out of Detroit?)

And we'll do tea then. And you'll smile about how you felt, way back in October 2005.
