Posted by Hello

Yesterday I bought a bike trailer by the Hema. I'm still saving up for a Fietsfabriek bakfiets (see www.fietsfabriek.nl) but that's going to take forever (I've got two kids in shoes now :-( and I really want to bike this summer with the girls. Two kid seats on one bike scares me to death -- I took a nasty fall once, with Mirthe -- she fel on her forehead and I twisted my knee. Anna screams her head off every time I put her in the bike seat and can't seem to see the fun in it. So I thought, a bike trailer for a year or so, not a bad idea and besides, my vacation money had just been deposited in my account. (For non-Dutch readers: vacation money is something you get in May, about 8% of your yearly salary. Usually about an extra month's pay. You get taxed extra heavy on your vacation money. It's not something you get for free from your employer :-) -- they set it aside for you every month and pay you out in May. It's kind of like forced saving, so that you can take a vacation or two a year. We get five weeks off, more if you work for the government. That kind of time off needs financing! We usually spend our vacation money on things like shoes, stuff for the backyard, furniture, going out to eat. And we rent a house on Terschelling for a week -- this year from 28 May to 4 June.) Anyway, we biked a pretty good distance Saturday, to get used to how the thing rides -- took the bike paths through the fields behind the Heksenwiel, nearby Terheijden. At the end we stopped for some coffee at the Texas Bar. The girls loved it, and after a half hour Anna fell into a deep sleep -- didn't cry once! There was no fighting, because the rule was, the minute I heard bickering, one of them had to sit in the bike seat (I still have it mounted on the back of my bike.) Mirthe chattered the whole way, pointing out the cows (and the cow poop, of course) and the butterflies and the boats in the canal by the bike path. It was beautiful weather, the first real summer day. Kind of a chilly wind (that's why they have sweaters on -- today it was almost 90 and I'm breaking out in a sweat just looking at those pictures of sweaters and tights!)
