I took this picture of Anna the first day "alone" -- Eric back to work, Mirthe at the creche, no more baby help (in the Netherlands you get professional help the first eight days from a "kraamhulp", kind of like a doula but not exactly, they're trained to help with just about everything and they clean your house and peel potatoes and take walks with your high-energy first child and tell visitors when it's time to leave, so that you can crawl back under the covers....man it almost makes me want to have another baby, just so I could have another week like that :-) Just me and Anna. She slept almost the whole day. I should have, but didn't -- I think I spent the whole day watching her... my beautiful baby girl.

This picture reminds me why I'm always a little sad when I go to the zoo. It's wonderful to see all the beautiful animals, the colors and the smells, how it brings a little bit of the world here to us. But then I see an animal like this, and start thinking about how they live in a box, instead of a jungle... This guy's sitting on concrete and leaning against plexiglas, when he should be swinging from tree to tree, miles away from the nearest human.
