Thuis

What I miss

People often ask me what I miss the most about the US. I don't miss all that much -- family and friends, of course, and the seasons and how nature goes through them.

These are blueberry fields near my parents' home. Photo courtesy of my father. I've never actually seen this with my own eyes, but I miss the possibility, the ability to get into a car and drive until I'm there.

Here we have the endless fields of tulips, beautiful in their own way. But they don't make me catch my breath the way this does.

Zondagsgevoel

Schoenzetten 2007

Because I surrendered the camera to Eric very early in the day today, I treated myself to some blurry-photo-making on the drive home from the grocery store.

"Life in a Northern Town" was on the radio and I felt like I was in the video :-)

Sinterklaasliedje 2007

Sinterklaas Kapoen...TJE!

April, come she will
When streams are ripe and swelled with rain;

May, she will stay,
Resting in my arms again.

June, she'll change her tune,
In restless walks she'll prowl the night;

July, she will fly
And give no warning to her flight.

August, die she must,
The autumn winds blow chilly and cold;

September I'll remember
A love once new has now grown old.

The girls had a gymnastics performance tonight, Anna (preschoolers) as a little witch, and Mirthe (1st graders) as a Harry Potter...something. A Hermione? I have to confess, I've never really gotten H.P. I read the first book in English and the fifth in Dutch, but never managed to get sparked onto the whole craze. There are so many other, slightly/much better written fantasy series for kids -- Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Redwall, Madeleine L'Engle. And The Dark is Rising series, I haven't thought about that in ages. I read those books when I was 11, maybe 12 -- I read them over and over, mostly in the bus to and from school. I'd like to get my hands on copies someday.

The performances went well and when we got home we watched it all again (Eric filmed) and then got the kids to bed before they passed out on the couch. I'm glad it's over -- I'm not a huge fan of those overcrowded, loud music type situations.

Tomorrow's St. Maarten (St. Martinus) here, and we're ready. We've learned a few new songs and we've got candy and mandarines, so even if no-one comes by, we'll still have a feast.

Who would you share your cloak with, this stormy autumn night?

Conversation with Anna, on the pot

"Mama, the poopie is in his house and he doesn't want to come out."

"Oh? What's he doing then? Is he is sleeping?"

"Nope."

"Is he drinking coffee?"

"Nope."

"Is he shy or something?"

"No." She glances up at me, with a weary, long-suffering look on her face. "He's just checking his email."

Done.

As is the battery in the camera, as am I. As were the children, at 19.00 -- what is up with these early bedtimes?

Heksenbrij

Mirthe dyed the t-shirt from her witch's costume purple -- tomorrow we're going to make it "scarier" with a grey gauzy material and purple sequins (her choice.)

The littlest witch is feeling quite better, thanks very much for the get-well-wishes. There was no more throwing up and she slept for fourteen hours straight. This afternoon she slept, without protesting, for three hours. She even managed a pout or two -- here because she wasn't allowed to stir the witches' brew.

dinsdag 6 november 2007

I never used to believe those people who showed pictures of their kids, asleep at the dinner table -- mostly because my own are semi-allergic for sleep and fight any and all urges to fall into it.

Until tonight. I asked Mirthe a question about her day and when I turned to ask Anna the same, boom, she was out. We kept trying to wake her up, but she wasn't having it. She felt sick and her head hurt and she was just going to close her eyes and think about it. Finally Mirthe ate Anna's sandwich and we decided to call it a night and head upstairs. It was 17.30 -- thank God Mirthe can't read a clock -- yet.

Once upstairs, we struggled to get Anna out of her clothes and then out of the blue she threw up. For the first time, ever, in her short life. Five times, actually. It was all over the bathroom (man I'm glad I didn't clean the bathroom this afternoon) and Mirthe burst into tears and panicked, because throwing up is a very traumatic thing for her. (And because she had said at the dinner tabe that she didn't believe Anna was really sick, just fake sick, that it was her fault that Anna threw up. I honestly don't know where she gets these things, but they worry me a little.) So I sent her downstairs for a glass so that Anna could rinse her mouth out and I cleaned up most of the gunk on the floor. Got Anna into her pjs and then she took about 47 tiny sips of water and spit each one out. She said she felt better and crawled into bed and promptly fell asleep. We woke her up one last time to show her where the upchuck bucket was, next to her bed, and she nodded and boom, she was out again.

I talked with Mirthe for a while about being sick and how you have to use the bucket etc etc etc (Mirthe is all about the technical stuff, the accessories, in situations) I told her how proud I was of her, for helping with Anna and how she was really sweet for her little sister. She beamed. And then she asked if Anna threw up again, if Mirthe could sleep in my bed tonight, 'cause that throwup really stinks.

I said I'd think about it :-)

Even with cleaning the bathroom and doing the first load of throwup laundry (I hate rinsing that stuff out in the bath, how do you all deal with that?) I was still downstairs at 18.35, which has, I'm pretty sure, never happened in my parenting career.

I don't know what to do with myself, I have all this time. I think I'll head in early, just in case the bug comes back and I have to change beds in the middle of the night.

And here they are in April 2005:

maandag 5 november 2007

What we ate yesterday (and today)*

Sauerkraut casserole/zuurkool stamppot

1 kilo potatoes
milk
butter

500 gr sauerkraut (bagged, not canned, if you can get it)
1 tsp. mustard (2 is also good)
1 T. vinegar (I use white balsamico)
1 clove of garlic (I always use three, because hey, garlic. Yum.)
1/2 tsp. curry (1 tsp. is better)
1/2 tsp. thyme

thick cut of bacon, sliced into little pieces (or leftover ham, or sausages)

1. Wash the sauerkraut in a colander. Really well. Wash all that krautiness out and let it drain for a few minutes. Then put it in a pan with the mustard, vinegar, garlic cloves, curry and thyme. Mix it up a bit and let it simmer/warm up/steam on the lowest heat you can manage. For at least 30 minutes.

2. While that's cooking, you can peel, cook (about 20 minutes) and mash the potatoes with the milk and butter. I make more than a kilo, probably closer to 1.5 kilos.

3. Fry the bacon/ham/whatever up and let it drain.

When the sauerkraut's really well steamed, mix it up with the mashed potatoes (I like to mash it all together so that the garlic cloves also get spread around.) Garnish with bacon and let the whole thing get crispy in the oven for a few minutes.

Lekker with cucumber salad (cucumbers sliced wafer thin with a cheese slicer thingy -- Jesus my English is getting bad -- and layered with a few tsp. of sugar, white vinegar and lots of white pepper.) Or just a regular winter salad.

Also, after you've put the sauerkraut on, and suddenly realize you don't have any applesauce in house and your kids won't eat this without applesauce just peel and slice a few apples, cover with water to cook for about 15 minutes and then throw whatever sugar's in the sugarpot in the pan, stir well and add generous amounts of cinnamon. Voila applesauce. Set outside to cool before you begin the potatoes. Cover well so that your cats don't decide to "help" with stirring.

Sleep with the windows open.

*Because all of a sudden it's fall here and this is the ultimate Dutch fall dish. I googled the recipe -- it's one of the first results, 'cause I'm lazy like that -- and it's been a favorite ever since. Also it's easier to write up a recipe than a regular post and it's already way past my bedtime.

Mirthe on the slide. Anna, 3jr9mnd.

Anna slides up to me, a butter-colored piece of paper clutched to her chest. "Mama, I have a surprise for you."

I am always up for surprises, especially those of the drawing kind. "Oh? Let me see then." I study the drawing before me and Anna doesn't even need to be prompted for the story behind it.

"It's Mirthe on the slide. And I'm watching. And there's a storm coming, see" -- she jabs at the paper -- "thunderclouds. And a dog who might drown but probably won't. And there's letters of course." She pauses for breath but there's no story left, so she just breathes slowly in and out. Professionally, silently, I note that there's also a horizon line, and that Mirthe has actual lips and not just a C-smile.

"You're pretty proud of that drawing, aren't you, Beano." I keep my eyes on her, waiting for an answer, but she's so lost in the world of what she's just drawn, that she can barely manage the tiniest of nods. Yes. Yes I am.

There was a day -- a few months after she was born, before her arm began to heal and move again -- when I just lost it. I cried and cried, thinking about what her life was going to be like, feeling enormous guilt for insisting on the natural delivery and not the c-section that would have left both her arms perfect and whole. Feeling guilty that it wasn't enough that she was alive -- because she could have died during the delivery, or had irreversible brain damage -- but that I also wanted her perfect. The way she was for 41 weeks, under my heart. Oh God, I thought. Let her be creative, let her have a beautiful voice, an imagination. But please don't let her want to draw, because she won't be able to, with that stupid, damaged, imperfect arm.

Almost four years later, I have a daughter who loves to draw. Who surprises me daily with what she can do, who refuses to acknowledge that she has a handicap. She doesn't know any better and I am gradually waking up to the fact that she can do anything she sets her mind to.

And I am so, so proud of her. Yes I am.

Vanavond nog even Kameleon 2 gekeken.

vrijdag 2 november 2007

I love those overalls. And the rosy little feet peeking out from underneath.

Homework. Self-imposed.

Anna sleeps on the baby blanket I got her from the Hema, the day before she was born.

Mirthe sleeps on my baby blanket, always has. Sometimes when I'm not feeling so great myself I have to fight the urge to go and grab it off her bed and fall asleep underneath it.

I'm enjoying the feminist mother dialogue over at Blue Milk. Too shy to write up my own answers and send them off to her, but still enjoying thinking about it all and where I might land in the spectrum.

donderdag 1 november 2007

Today Mirthe had an "expected unexpected" day off from school (they told us about it last week :-) -- they're moving the furnaces in the school and would be without heat on Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday is always a half day, but a whole Thursday without heat was considered cruel and unusual punishment. I'm guessing this is the closest we'll ever get to something like a snow day. I got all nostalgic this morning when I realized my kids would probably never know the joy of waking up in the early morning hours, fresh blanket of snow outside, to flip on the tv and wait breathlessly for their school's name to show up in the closings list. Oh Michigan, how I miss thee!

Yesterday none of us had any Halloween mojo so we saved the pumpkin carving for today. We were also supposed to bake brownies (that was the mojo we were missing yesterday) but... time got away from us. Keeping with the snow day idea we stayed in pjs until noon and Mirthe's ultimate dream came true: she got to watch "all" the shows Anna watches while she's stuck at school learning how to read. So pjs and The Triplets and Strawberry Shortcake it was. Then we got dressed and ate lunch, and carved pumpkins, and created an enormous Barbie ranch in the living room and dining room. It took a lot of coffee on my part to get that far in the expected unexpected day off.

And then grocery shopping, and Anna's gymnastics.

And dinner and bed. The brownies will have to wait until tomorrow :-)

I'm 39 and I still get so excited looking into a pumpkin that's been hollowed out. Maybe because we only get to do it once a year?

I carried the pumpkin theme further -- maybe a little too far -- and made pumpkin soup. Here it is at the bouillon stage. There were sausages and roasted shallots as garnish, depending on whether you eat meat, or not.

And I just had a flashback to high school, and Sarah saying "snausages" like only she can -- Sarah, if you ever read this, will you call me up one day and just say "snausages" and then hang up? So that I remember how it really sounds.

Just this once, 'cause mama was somewhere else with her thoughts and didn't have enough time to insist on proper attire at the dinner table -- they were allowed to eat wearing their leotards. Mirthe and Anna, that is.

That's making me smile, thinking of Eric in a leotard. Hee!
